Community services offers a variety of programs to improve the health and well-being of members of our community. Many of the programs are decentralized throughout the city with a concentration in the lower income areas.

Community Services

Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) Program

The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) provides federal grants to states for supplemental foods, health care referrals, and nutrition education for low-income pregnant, breastfeeding, and non-breastfeeding postpartum women, and to infants and children up to age five who are found to be at nutritional risk.

Neighborhood Centers

Neighborhood Centers provide a variety of health and social services for low and moderate income residents in various neighborhoods throughout Austin, such as emergency rent, utility, and food assistance.

Family Health Unit

  • Austin Healthy Adolescent Program (AHA) works to enhance the quantity and quality of youth leadership programs across Travis County and Del Valle.

  • Austin Youth Development (AYD) provides city jobs to youth to learn the skills they need to reach their educational and career goals.
  • Community Youth Development (CYD) provides an array of prevention services and programs for positive youth development in the 78744 zip code.
  • Early Childhood Programs
    • Family Connects Texas is a free evidence-based, nurse home visiting program for all families with newborns.
    • Child Care: In partnership with the Austin/Travis County Success By Six Coalition, the City works to ensure families have access to high-quality early learning options that meet their needs. Additionally, the City works with Texas Rising Star 4-Star providers through Workforce Solutions Capital Area Child Care Services (CCS) to provide subsidized child care for eligible families.

Day Labor Center

Day Labor manages First Workers, a resource for providing laborers who are skilled in a variety of trades.
